London City Airport is to undergo a major renovation project in line with its 25th anniversary.
Officials behind the £15 million development have said that it will include the refurbishment of the Western Pier while the international arrivals hall will be subject to extensive improvement work. Baggage handling areas are also due to be renovated as the airport looks to cope with the demand on the facility in the coming years. The plans come despite objections from local residents who claim that the expansion would cause an increase of air and noise pollution due to the large number of flights coming into the airport.
London City is situated right in the heart of the English capital, sitting on a former Docklands site, and is ideal for passengers working in the business district of the city due to its close proximity to Canary Wharf. It provides much easier transport links as opposed to other major airports such as Gatwick and Heathrow if people are looking to conduct business meetings and other activities during their stay in the capital and an expansion is designed to attract more passengers into London.
Declan Collier, chief executive of London City, said: "With the investment we've announced today and further infrastructure work over the next three years, we can reach our permitted capacity, maintain our high standards and absorb some European air traffic from other airports in the south-east that are beginning to feel the strain."
London City's expansion comes as both Gatwick and Heathrow are in talks for growth themselves, with the latter looking to build a controversial third runway, which has attracted criticism from local residents. The city centre airport is serviced by a host of major operators including the likes of Air France and British Airways.
The latter charters flights to a variety of domestic routes and also has a direct service to New York's JFK. However, due to its importance to business passengers London City's busiest route is to Zurich in Switzerland.
