A bollard thought to be made from an old cannon has been demolished by a lorry that crashed into it.
The barrier, used to protect a 17th century building in Marlborough, was snapped at its base by the oncoming vehicle. The incident has sparked calls to ban heavy goods vehicles from using Silverless Street, which runs between Herd Street, the main Swindon Road and Kingsbury Street as a shortcut.
Over the years iron security bollards have withstood vehicles colliding with them but have stood firm, the main purpose was to protect the low pent roof outside Dormy House, which was a grocers shop and then an antiques shop.
Nick Fogg, West Ward Wiltshire councillor, told the Gazette & Herald: "A lot of those very old bollards were old cannons from the fleet, although I don't know if this one was. If it was, it’s important to get it put back as a historic feature."
Elsewhere, bollards in Burton have been causing havoc for motorists after another driver hit the barrier on the high street.
