Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is looking to expand its current confines with the construction of a new campus within its Birley Fields property in Hulme.

As the new academic year draws closer for many students across the UK, universities are deliberating various ways in which they can appeal to the latest intake of undergraduates and MMU is looking to boost the options available with the creation of a brand new campus.

While the overall cost of the plans will add up to £139 million, the university announced that GB Building Solutions has secured a £28 million contract to construct part of the development.

Officials stated that then new accommodation scheme will help to give students a bigger selection of where they can stay during their time at university, as well as providing a significant boost to the community around Birley Fields. Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, has already been quick to praise the development, stating that it represents the "final major building block in one of the UK’s most successful regeneration projects".

Sir Richard added: "We've seen what MMU have done with their new Business School and here the city will have another world class resource, this one for nursing, teacher training, social work and the health professions."

Plans include student bedrooms across 77 townhouses and 34 cluster flats with officials stating that the work will formally get underway in January 2013. GB has also said that the development will consist of a nod to providing better waste management with the company outlining plans to recycle 98 per cent of excess that is created from the construction work.

The move also helps MMU to compete with the other institutes within the city, including the likes of Manchester University as well as the other specialised universities within the north-west.

Martin Smout, chairman and chief executive of GB Group, said: "There is a real drive amongst universities to lead the way in terms of sustainable developments and sustainable living for the students who live there."
