A viaduct connecting a series of train stations in Manchester is due to go under public consultation for possible construction.
Network Rail has unveiled proposals that will see the structure potentially built north-west of the Castlefield junction, crossing the River Irwell to connect both Manchester and Salford. The organisation states that this new line will help to improve train links between Manchester's Victoria, Oxford Road and Piccadilly stations and will be put before the public from November 20th. The proposals will be displayed at a number of events across the city for eight days following the initial unveiling.
Named the Ordsall Chord, Network Rail is looking to speed up journey times across Manchester as well as taking the strain off the current routes that go in and out of the city. Officials stated that it will also provide a major boost to the area's employment levels with around 20,000 to 30,000 jobs being created while the economy is set to be stimulated through a £4.2 billion boost.
Jo Kaye, Network Rail route managing director, said: "The Ordsall Chord is the first part of our wider plan to bring a better railway to the north of England. Our proposals will help the economy, making it easier for people to travel between the towns and cities of the North as a result of greatly improved connections across the region."
The plans are part of a wider vision for Network Rail to improve links around Manchester with two new fast trains per hour between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool being included. There will also be scope for six additional services between Manchester and Leeds while routes to the north-east including Hull and Newcastle will also be significantly improved.
Manchester is already undergoing a major revamp to its public transport network with the Metrolink tram service being significantly expanded to areas such as Oldham, Rochdale, Droylsden and Manchester Airport. These plans are currently ongoing with the service already extended to Oldham Mumps and MediaCityUK where the BBC is currently situated.
