Police in North Yorkshire have been successful in finding out who was responsible for stealing metal railings from York Racecourse.

Four men have been charged with the offence after they were arrested on October 17th, reports the York Press.

They were reported to police by a member of the public, who saw the men cutting up the metal railings at the racecourse.

The four men then loaded the scrap metal on to the back of a van on Cherry Lane, which was later seized by police.

Each of the individuals, aged 18, 20, 23 and 34 have been charged with both criminal damage and theft and are now waiting to appear at York Magistrates' Court later this month.

The Local Government Association recently called for tighter regulations to be implemented in order to prevent metal theft.

It proposed that dealers should be required to keep records of their sellers' details so the origin of scrap metal can be traced.
