Metal railings aren't the most attractive of safety measures – so good news that schoolchildren have been praised for designing colourful road safety signs to attach to them.
Jake Manock and Katie Croxford, who go to Markington Primary School, have won a competition to design road safety signs to attach to the metal railings outside their school, the Ripon Gazette reports.
The pair had their designs chosen by a panel of three judges, including representatives from North Yorkshire fire and rescue service and Harrogate District Community Safety Partnership.
Each design warns motorists to watch their speed and be alert to pupils crossing the road.
Markington headteacher Michelle Dawson told the newspaper: "The children each did a brilliant design. They took a long time and care over their entries."
Jake and Katie were both given chocolate eggs as prizes.
This month, metal railings were put up along a bus route in King's Lynn as part of a drive to improve pedestrian safety.
There were concerns that pedestrians may be at risk from buses passing down a narrow street; but the addition of the railings will keep walkers safe, the Eastern Daily Press reported.
