A vicar says metal railings will help stop vandals daubing graffiti on his listed church in Hartlepool, but is concerned he doesn't have the money to install them.
According to the Hartlepool Mail, St Oswald's Church, in the Brougham Terrace area of the city, was attacked earlier this week, with visitors arriving for their Monday morning service to find the building covered in markings.
"The local people are not happy, the whole community is not happy," Father Graeme Buttery told the newspaper.
Expressing his anger over what had happened, Father Buttery explained that the paint is very difficult to get off and will leave a mark for many years to come.
"There used to be railings around the church before the world war and we might have to restore them, but then that will be £60,000 to raise and we might have to look at security cameras in the future," he explained to the newspaper.
However, the church's annual turnover last year was just £30,000.
A spokesperson for Cleveland Police appealed for witnesses.
