Transport minister Norman Baker joined pupils from Martins Wood Primary School, Hertfordshire, to reopen a set of security gates.
The barriers were originally shut 12 years ago amid fears over the children's wellbeing following the Dunblane massacre, which claimed the lives of 15 pupils and one adult.
However, Mr Baker reopened the school's rear gates and joined with teachers in a new initiative to get pupils walking in the morning as opposed to getting the bus or car on their way to school each day.
Whilst the gates had been shut off, the school's headteacher Tom Evans believes the improved locking system means the children's safety in ensured now more than ever.
Mr Baker said: "This pilot has shown that if you remove traffic and create an environment that is safe and fun, children and parents want to walk to school. This project is about giving local communities the support they need to tackle issues at a local level."
