Nottingham City Council has invested in automated security bollards in a market town north-west of the centre in an attempt to stop motorists driving through a pedestrianised zone.
According to the Hucknall Dispatch, the local authority was forced to take the measure after residents complained of vehicles being driven on a wide paved area meant for shoppers.
Following a public consultation, the bollards were put in place on Pilkington Street and Main Street at its junction with Montague Street.
Ros Yousouf, of Rufford Tenants and Residents Association, which led the campaign to stop drivers using the path, said: "To say we are pleased would be a huge understatement. Using Bulwell Market will now be a much safer experience."
The Yorkshire Evening Post recently reported that a multi-storey car park in Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, could undergo £5.5 million worth of improvements including security bollards, ahead of Leeds Arena's opening in 2013.
