Morgan Sindall has announced that it has landed a huge contract at the Sellafield nuclear power plant in Cumbria.

The company, in a joint venture with Arup Group, has secured a £1.1 billion deal to deliver major infrastructure work to the UK's biggest nuclear facility, which has been designed to significantly improve logistics around the site.

Both parties fought off strong competition from Balfour Beatty to secure the much sought-after contract, which is due to be signed later in the year for an initial five years. Officials noted, however, that this could be extended to ten years should it be necessary and once the first timeframe has elapsed.

Morgan Sindall stated that the 'Infrastructure Strategic Alliance' would involve a plethora of jobs that would help to improve systems around Sellafield. Among these duties are maintaining steam and electricity generation, transport infrastructure around the site, ensuring that the water supply, chemical storage and distribution and drainage networks are all kept up to code. This will ensure the smooth running of the UK's most important structure in terms of generating electricity and power to the rest of the country.

George Beveridge, Nuclear Management Partners’ deputy managing director for Sellafield Ltd, said: "We have set ourselves a number of challenging targets through our performance plan. Long term, collaborative alliances with supply chain partners represent best industry practice and it's important that we seize that opportunity to unlock expertise and innovation and safely deliver our work programme quicker and more cost effectively."

Paul Smith, chief executive of Morgan Sindall Group, added to these sentiments, stating that the company was honoured with the award and it was fantastic for both the firm and Sellafield as a whole.

The nuclear facility has stood on the Cumbrian coast for the past 67 years and is an integral part of the UK's energy needs and officials believe that by upgrading the site's infrastructure will have a plethora of benefits for the workers that operate at Sellafield on a regular basis.
