An application to install mesh security fencing on a multi-storey car park in Nelson, Lancashire, has been lodged this week.
The Pendle Rise car park, which sits in the heart of the town and next to the town's market and shopping centre, has become notorious as a "suicide hot spot" after the latest victim, Ian Nutter from Barnoldswick, fell to his death in January.
He was the eighth person to die at the site in the past ten years.
Following the incident there has been renewed calls to improve safety at the facility.
If the application is approved then fencing will be put up on all levels of the car park and councillors hope that this will reduce the amount of incidents in the future.
Councillor Eileen Ansar told the Lancashire Telegraph: "I am delighted that we have moved closer to seeing the fencing erected. It will save many lives and no matter how much it costs, it will be worth it."
