Carlisle has finally unveiled a sports park complete with play area fencing at the Old Trinity Church site in Caldewgate.

The £140,000 area has been under construction since June 2011 and has now officially been opened. It includes facilities for sports such as football and basketball as well as doubling up as a court for tennis and rugby.

When the project was initially started it was heralded by Carlisle City councillor Ray Bloxham as a facility that would provide young people with an outlet "to prevent the boredom factor and possible anti-social behaviour".

It was made possible by a £50,000 from United Utilities.

John Parr, from the company, said: "This new games area will be a terrific community resource. It will be suitable for all weathers, and will be used for a host of sports, from football to basketball. I really hope people enjoy using it."

This is just one of the many play areas that have been installed in recent weeks with the Shields Gazette reporting of many celebrations when a new "futuristic" playground was open in South Shields.
