The Co-operative Group's new headquarters in Manchester has been named the most environmentally-friendly building in the world.
Officials announced in 2007 that the company would be relocating from its premises on Miller Street and Corporation Street to a new site. Since then work has been on-going to create a new headquarters and work on One Angel Square began in 2010. It was completed in February 2013 and has already gained significant praise for its commitment to the environment.
Built by BAM Construction, the 14-storey structure has received a score of 95.16 per cent from The British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), it represents the highest ever total awarded. The score comes as The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are set to be given a tour of the building to signify its official opening.
One Angel Square has an intriguing design which includes a double skin facade that is said to act as a "duvet" allowing offices to be both insulated during winter and ventilated in the summer. BAM has installed a number of other environmentally-friendly features including the ability to produce power from crops grown on the Co-op's farms. The premises is able to be heated and cooled by drawing air from underneath the basement and redistributing it at the earth's core temperature.
Euan Sutherland, The Co-operative Group Chief Executive said: ‘From the outset the Group set very high aspirations for the green credentials of the new building but for One Angel Square to be recognised as the most environmentally friendly building in the world is a truly remarkable achievement.
"The visit today (November 14th) of the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh symbolises the completion of the building and one of the most significant UK construction projects in the past five years."
