Children in Plymouth will be rejoicing if proposals for a new play area in the city centre are approved by planners.

The money for the development will come from a joint venture by the city's council and the developers of Drake Circus shopping mall, P&O Estates and Laing's PLC, giving youngsters somewhere to play while mum and dad indulge in some retail therapy.

Many have wanted to see an activity centre in the city for some time, as children do not have any other places to go and play whilst their parents are shopping. The Drake Circus was completed in 2007, and is Plymouth's most popular retail centre.

The Plymouth Herald reported that once it was built there was a deal in place to create a shoppers' crèche if it was deemed practical. However, once the shopping centre was built, developers did not believe there was sufficient reason for a play area to be built.
