Milton Keynes is set to be home to a new flagship Primark store after the retailer agreed terms to build a 90,000 sq ft outlet within the city.

The development will be situated at thecentre:mk shopping centre and is part of major expansion works at the retail park. Officials have stated that the new Primark will spread over three floors providing visitors with every aspect the low price shop has to offer, from clothing to bedding to items for the home. It comes after a large investment programme was announced at the Milton Keynes development with John Lewis, Next and House of Fraser all undergoing major work to attract new customers from around the area.

John Lewis is set to be subject to a £27 million extension and refurbishment which is already underway, while both Next and House of Fraser completed a £6 million expansion and refit and a £4.5 million refurbishment respectively. The construction of the Primark will provide healthy competition between the brands but also help to entice more shoppers to spend time at thecentre:mk. The plans also represent a major £40 million development at Secklow Gate to allow the land to be available for the new Primark.

Officials have already hailed the new project, with Mark Lancaster, member of parliament for Milton Keynes North, already expressing his delight at the development. The joint owners of the retail centre are now keen to show off the plans to the public and are holding an exhibition today (July 20th) and tomorrow July 21st between 10:00 BST and 18:00 BST at Middleton Hall for people to view the proposals.

Ben Tolhurst, asset manager Hermes Real Estate Investment Management Limited, said: "We are firmly committed to the development and evolution of thecentre:mk, and the introduction of high profile retailers looking to expand into Milton Keynes is critical to  maintaining its national retail rankings.

"Primark has had a requirement for Central Milton Keynes for some time, which is testament to the strong customer demand in the area."
