New security fencing has been installed around a geothermal pool at a park in New Zealand after the death of a ten-year-old boy.
The boy fell into the hot pool in Kuirau Park, in Rotorua, on Boxing Day last year, suffering severe burns and later dying in hospital.
Geothermal pools can have temperatures beyond 100 degrees Celsius.
The original one metre fence scaled by the boy was shored-up by a 1.8m temporary fence after the incident, and now permanent 1.2m security fencing will be installed.
"From our point of view, we just want to minimise the risk of such a horrific incident happening again," Nico Claassen, a council district engineer, told the Rotorua Daily Post.
But while new fencing will up around the pool, there are no plans to do the same for the park's other pool areas.
Rotorua council parks and recreation manager Garry Page was quoted by the New Zealand Herald as saying: "We've had at least 250,000 people a year through Kuirau Park and we've never had a fatality."
