Plans for a new transport hub in Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, have been approved by members of the Wythenshawe Area Consultative Committee (WACC).

The proposals which were put forward by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) include a new £6.7 million interchange which will sit next to the Metrolink station which will be created as part of the infrastructure expansion. The approval comes after a public consultation earlier in the year provided positive feedback as officials at TfGM look to better connect the Greater Manchester area through the Metrolink service. It will also include scope to significantly improve the bus links between Wythenshawe and the rest of the region.

Officials noted that the new interchange will boast a host of facilities that will benefit passengers coming to and from the town centre. There will be a number of enclosed waiting areas as well as high quality CCTV cameras, environmentally-friendly technology to provide light and heat and a Travelshop to provide passengers with amenities for their journey. It is among a number of Metrolink stations which area planned for the area with a completion date earmarked for 2015.

Councillor Andrew Fender, chair of the TfGM committee, said: "We are delighted that this planning application has been approved, as the new interchange will bring a wide range of benefits to Wythenshawe. It will give the community a modern transport hub with state-of-the-art facilities in addition to being a great advantage for local businesses and employers."

The Wythenshawe Metrolink station will sit on the line to Manchester Airport which will provide commuters and holidaymakers easy access to one of the country's major airports.

Currently there are only direct trains from Manchester Piccadilly that service the facility but this is due to change with the completion of this new route and officials want it to be up and running by 2016. It is part of a much wider Metrolink expansion which will connect more areas of the north-west such as Oldham, Rochdale and Ashton-under-Lyne to Manchester.
