Birmingham's £35 million science park is set for further work after the city's council chose the winner of the developing contract of the next phase of construction.
Thomas Vale Construction was selected by officials, beating off competition from the likes of Bruntwood and a Trebor Developments/Hortons Estate partnership, after whittling down an original application process of 80 companies. The firm chosen will conduct the next phase of the science park, known as iCentrumTM, with work getting underway in the coming weeks. It is estimated to take 12 months to complete. Officials have stated that the next phase of the project is due to cost £7.5 million and will become the first speculatively office development in the UK's second city for four years.
The firm is set to submit an application for the 30,000 sq ft iCentrumTM building later in the summer, which will go alongside outline plans for the Digital Plaza, which covers 120,000 sq ft and encompasses the rest of the development. If all proposals are approved by planning committees, then work could begin as early as the end of 2012 and be completed in time for Christmas 2013.
Dr David Hardman MBE, chief executive of Birmingham Science Park said: "As the economy continues the slow climb out of recession, it is tremendous news that Thomas Vale Construction's proposals will enable us to deliver the first Digital Plaza building speculatively, while also linking with – and investing into an upgrade of – our flagship Faraday Wharf building."
Tony Hyde, managing director of Thomas Vale Construction also commended the deal saying: “Having such deep roots with Birmingham, we are proud and excited to have been selected to deliver this partnership project."
Birmingham is in the midst of major regeneration work with the city's New Street train station set for improvements after it was announced last week that construction of an adjoining John Lewis flagship store had begun. The Construction Enquirer reported that Mace had taken over the job which would be ready in time for the completion of the nearby Pallasades in 2014.
