Birmingham's iconic National Indoor Arena (NIA) is set to undergo a major renovation project as the key contractor behind the project has been selected.

Galliford Try has been named as the company responsible for taking on the first part of redevelopment work. While the initial deal is worth £18 million, the overall project will cost £41 million to complete and will see the firm taking on the most difficult part of the construction work while the arena is still open and hosting a number of entertainment events.

Officials have stated that the major difference that will occur at the NIA will be the installation of a glassed front which overlooks the nearby canal, three sky needles which will be attached to the structure's roof and steps down to the waterway. The next couple of months are a very busy time for Birmingham's city centre arena with rock acts such as Nickleback and Slash gracing the stage over October while November will see the 11 day run of Disney On Ice's Passport to Adventure production.

This raft of events could act as a hindrance to Galliford Try's progress but the company is confident that it can carry out the work and deliver refurbished facilities on time and within budget. Officials noted that the renovation will not just focus on the outer surroundings of the NIA but also improve the inside for the visitor's experience. Once completed, concert-goers will be able to benefit from significantly improved public concourse levels in a bid to increase the amount of food and drink facilities that are available both before and after a performance.

Greg Fitzgerald, Galliford Try's chief executive, spoke of his pleasure at being able land such an important construction job, adding: "We are delighted to have won two such significant contracts in an extremely competitive market. These contract awards show that we can compete in all regions and provide our clients with high quality cost effective solutions for their needs."
