An oil refinery in Essex has announced plans to build security fencing around its perimeter in an effort to deter potential terrorist attacks.
Petrochem Carless in Parkeston has submitted plans to the local council to build three-metre high metal railings around its 13-hectare site following a recent survey by the Counter Terrorism Security Office, which found that the refinery is potentially at risk from terrorists seeking to steal hazardous material.
The proposed project would replace Petrochem's current chain link and barbed wire fence with galvanised palisade fencing to deter potential intruders.
Petrochem was advised to consider supplementing the fencing with "hostile topping", which could house a perimeter intruder detection system. Tendring Council is due to give their decision on the plans by October 17th.
Sports and Olympics minister Hugh Robertson recently announced that plans to protect the London 2012 Games with security fencing and other measures will still go ahead despite the terrorism threat level being reduced.
