Work on Oldham College is due to begin on February 4th after proposals were given approval by a planning committee at the town council.

Construction firm Laing O'Rourke has been tasked with making the £10 million masterplan come to fruition and the first phase of the project, which includes designs from Aedas, will start in the coming weeks. Officials stated that the initial part will see the development of a five-storey Learning Hub which will be situated on the corner of Middleton Road and Rochdale Road. It is aimed at significantly improving the level of facilities at the north-west college and will provide a boost for both students and staff.

Plans for the redevelopment of Oldham College include the creation of 28 new classrooms, a community space, new student support facilities as well as a brand new front entrance. With Laing O'Rourke being granted a start date, officials are aiming to have the upgrade completed by 2014 with pupils being able to reap the benefits of the improved facilities.

Alun Francis, principal of the college, said: "We have also aimed to improve the built environment in the town centre, and to ensure that, given the economic situation, there are local labour benefits, including apprenticeships, work experience and a very useful onsite construction project that will give invaluable experience to many of our building services students and staff."

Oldham College sits in the heart of the Greater Manchester town and currently offers students a host of qualifications in a range of different areas that can set them up for a career in either higher education or the working world. The institute currently specialises in subjects such as business services, creative arts, care and early years, construction and engineering, creative service industries and skills for life.

The college's hierarchy believe that by completing the development of the campus will provide great incentives to every person that attends the facility on a daily basis and will continue to do so in to the future.
