The Olympic Games in London was heralded as a major success by everyone involved as well as the general public.
However, while prime minister David Cameron has been keen to stress the importance of creating a 'legacy' once the event is over, the future of the Olympic Stadium still remains unresolved. The London Assembly heard on Wednesday (November 7th) that the Stratford ground may not be re-opened until 2016 due to the amount of work that would be involved to convert it from an athletics stadium to whatever is the next stage in its development.
Dennis Hone, chief executive of the London Legacy Development Corporation, told officials at a meeting of the Assembly's Budget and Performance Committee that the Olympic Stadium would not open until August 2015 at the very earliest. He also added that if West Ham United FC were selected to take over the site then these plans would be put back even further to August 2016 due to the club making amendments to allow football to be played at the facility.
The future of the showpiece stadium of the London Olympics has been a long and drawn-out process with West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient all laying down plans and proposals as to why they should be given the right to relocate to the Stratford site. West Ham remain the frontrunner for the contract after Tottenham switched its focus to redeveloping their current White Hart Lane ground rather than relocating but even if The Hammers are given the contract Mr Hone expects a long construction process.
He explained that the Corporation was still in the process of assessing the four bidders that have put their hat in the ring for the contract but strongly denied that the stadium could be home to an American Football team.
John Biggs, assembly member and chair of the budget and performance committee, said: "It's disappointing to hear of more delay to the Olympic Stadium legacy. Regardless of who gets the stadium, a huge amount of work will need to be done before it can reopen to the public."
