Residents have won a battle with Tesco over security fencing after the supermarket promised to replace their fences during the construction of a new store.

The Epping Forest Guardian reported that neighbours in Highams Park feared for the security of their homes after a nearby Tesco removed a perimeter fence from the bottom of their gardens.

Supermarket giant Tesco had promised to replace the ten-foot fence with a six-foot timber one but it was rejected by residents over safety concerns. Tesco has now agreed to replace it with a new chainlink fence, following support from Chingford MP Iain Duncan Smith.

Resident Jude Leighton, told the source: "I'm absolutely delighted, it's a happy ending. I do have to say that our local politicians and Iain Duncan Smith really supported us on this."

Tesco hopes to start work on its new 24-hour store next week with it due to be completed in time for Christmas.
