Security fencing is one of the best ways to stop thieves stealing fruit and veg from the Longview Community Garden, according to the green-fingered residents who work on the land.

One gardener, Fred Hanson, told TDN.com that he has had at least 100 potato plants stolen while other people have had the bulk of their produce pinched.

The residents told the news provider that the thieves are becoming more brazen, with some stealing during the daytime rather than waiting for nightfall.

Currently, the garden is fenced along three sides and the local community is hoping to install a security fence with a gate along the fourth side to help deter thieves.

"It's maddening to work hard for many months, and then people just take things," Mr Hanson told the news provider.

Last week, it was reported by the Echo that members of an allotment in Southend have appealed for funding to install security fencing after high levels of anti-social behaviour in the area.ADNFCR-3337-ID-800109998-ADNFCR
