Metal security fencing has gone up around allotments in a West Yorkshire town to improve security and replace outmoded and dilapidated wooden fencing, it has been reported.
The allotments, in Heckmondwike, have been improved as part of a £1 million development project by Kirklees Council, the Spenborough Guardian reports.
Wooden fencing, which had become rundown, has been replaced with modern, green-coloured metal security fencing at the site in Westfield Road.
The council has also improved the system for managing the plots, so that they are regularly inspected to make sure they are being properly cared for.
Julian Faulkner, Kirklees allotment officer, told the newspaper: "We now have over 1,940 workable plots across Kirklees. We had over 200 plots that we couldn't let because of their condition, being badly overgrown or covered in dumped materials."
Recently, it was announced that security fencing would be installed at a park in Walsall as part of a five-year regeneration plan.
