The deployment of security fencing has been put forward as the best way to stop rabbits using a recreational ground in Welshpool.

According the Daily Post, the rabbit population at the Maes y Dre fields has flourished in recent years, making the ground dangerous to play on due to the animals' use.

A meeting to discuss possible solutions was organised by the town council, with people putting forward extreme suggestions such as using garlic repellent, and even gassing the rabbits.

However, campaigners strongly oppose these methods, calling them "short-sighted and cruel".

John Bryant, a wildlife consultant, told the newspaper that culling the rabbits will not work, unless every single rabbit is caught, which would be very unlikely.

"The only way to deal with this, although it may be expensive, is to fence off the area with a high fence, and turn the bottom in to where the rabbits are coming from, so they can't dig under," he told the newspaper.
