Sheffield's Supertram network is set to experience a significant upgrade over the summer months as new plans have been unveiled.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and operator Stagecoach confirmed that around £32 million will be invested to update the ageing tracks. It will include replacing worn out sections of the line ensuring the long term future of the tram system. Work is due to take place over the next five summers and officials have reassured commuters that contingency plans are going to be put in place to reduce the amount of disruption during the renovations.
The Supertram is a key part of infrastructure within the south Yorkshire city connecting every point of the area. Running three different routes, yellow, blue and purple lines, it provides key links with the city centre and major amenities on the outskirts such as Meadowhall shopping centre, Hillsborough football stadium, the Don Valley Arena and stadium and both Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University.
Upgrading the system is designed to ensure the longevity of the routes and Supertram engineers have already been instrumental in extending the lifespan of the track by up to five years. Officials stated that around 22km of the line needed to be replaced by 2024 following decades of wear and tear from both trams and heavy road traffic.
Margaret Kay, Supertram managing director, said: “These are essential works for the Supertram network and for everyone who uses our trams. We understand that our passengers may find it frustrating at times while work is being carried out, but we are working hard to minimise the level of disruption our customers will face.
"We will be providing detailed information about the planned work and the contingency arrangements that will be in place”.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive has confirmed that it will be carrying out the infrastructure work and will also cover any reduced passenger revenue associated with the temporary disruption.
SYPTE stated that it is currently awaiting the outcome of a £5 million to the Department for Transport's Local Pinch Point Fund to help provide cash for the completion of the project.
