Steel production in the UK increased by almost a quarter last year as the world economy staged a successful recovery, new data shows, which may be of interest people involved in security fencing projects.

UK Steel said that 9.4 million tonnes of steel were produced in 2010, compared to 7.5 million tonnes in the previous year.

The improvement was replicated worldwide. According to the World Steel Association, global crude steel production reached 1,414 million metric tons in 2010 - an increase of 15 per cent on 2009 and a record for steel production.

"All the major steel-producing countries and regions showed double-digit growth in 2010," the association said.

Commenting on the UK outlook, Ian Rodgers, the director of UK Steel, said: "The strong improvement in steel output during 2010 was encouraging, and reflects the pick-up in manufacturing activity experienced both in the UK and in our principal European export markets."

But he warned that production is still bellow pre-recession levels.ADNFCR-3337-ID-800360273-ADNFCR
