Stoke City have announced their intention of expanding the capacity of the Britannia Stadium to 30,000.
The club revealed that they are looking into the detailed feasibility of increasing their ground's capacity by 'filling in' the corners between the Seddon Stand and Marstons' Pedigree Stand which is currently occupied by a giant TV screen. Club officials have announced that they intend on taking the opportunity to obtain planning permission for the work to take place which will allow the Premier League side to accommodate more supporters in the coming year.
Stoke have seen a surge in attendances since their return to the top flight in 2008 and the number of season ticket holders has now pushed past the 20,000 mark, with the club noting that there has been a significant increase in the amount of younger fans attending matches. Since Stoke entered the Premier League they have had reasonable success with Tony Pulis' side reaching a FA Cup final as well as playing in the Europa League while still steering well clear of relegation each season.
Tony Scholes, the club's chief executive, highlighted their previous home fixture which saw 27,529 see The Potters beat Queens Park Rangers 1-0, representing the side's biggest attendance of the season. Mr Scholes that this impressive turn-out was made even better due to the small allocation taken by away supporters and noted that this shows the scope for a possible expansion.
"The decision to apply for planning permission to expand the Britannia Stadium comes after careful consideration for a number of years. The atmosphere generated by our sell-out crowds since promotion to the Premier League has undoubtedly played a huge part in the club's continued success and we have to be mindful of the fact that any expansion could have an affect on that," Mr Scholes added.
The club is in the process of the make-up of the potential new area of the ground and what type of supporters to aim the stand at.
