Swansea FC have announced proposals to increase the capacity of the Liberty Stadium to 32,000, with formal plans to be launched within the next couple of weeks.

The south Wales club experienced a successful first season in the Premiership last campaign, finishing 11th in the table under the stewardship of manager Brendan Rodgers. However, following Rodgers' departure to Liverpool and the appointment of new boss Michael Laudrup, the club is looking to build a stadium which matches the ambition of the new manager and playing staff for the coming years.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has stated that the club are looking to add a further 11,500 seats to the Liberty Stadium, at which the side has been playing at since their move from the Vetch Field in 2005, but he was keen to stress that no work would start until the club has secured a third-successive season in the Premiership from 2013, the Western Mail reports.

Mr Jenkins revealed that the club is close to submitting a plan to build on the three stands which are owned by the council and run by a company which includes Swansea FC, rugby side Ospreys and the local authority. While plans had been held back for a long time, fast food giant McDonalds' recent approval to build an outlet near the stadium had prompted the club to move, as it would mean that no expansion could take place, the company later withdrew its application.

The Swansea chairman told the source: "It is something that is on-going. We are pushing ahead to get planning permission submitted, which we have not yet. All that will progress. We will put in the application as soon as we can before the start of the season. Looking at timescales to start work, we would need to see how we are going after January 2013 and we can start moving and put some dates in."

Swansea begin their second successive campaign in the Premiership with an away game at Queens Park Rangers, before facing newly-promoted West Ham United at the Liberty Stadium the following week.
