Tata Steel is investing heavily in the security of its works in Scunthorpe, which may include improved metal gates and steel fencing, after a series of scrap metal thefts took place at the site in the past year.
So far, £300,000 worth of metal has been stolen from the steelworks and ten arrests have been made in connection with the thefts, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.
Now a new visitor centre will be created to provide access control for people coming and going from the site, and manned barriers and automatic number plate recognition technology will be installed on the main gates.
"We have been repeatedly targeted by criminals who illegally drive onto the site to steal our property and, in some cases, risk their lives breaking into live electricity substations," site director Sean Lyons told the newspaper.
The company also announced this month that it is putting £1.5 million into boosting regeneration in Scunthorpe and north Lincolnshire.
