A teenager will have to pay compensation after parking barriers were damaged at Burton shopping centre.

Jamie Cooper was convicted of two counts of criminal damage last week and will now be forced to have a 12-month community order including 80 hours of unpaid work.

Furthermore, he will have to pay £500 compensation in addition to £85 worth of costs following the incidents that took place on February 27th and April 2nd, reports Burton Mail.

Defending, Mark Aspden, said a mechanism fault is also partly to blame.

"I am not going to gloss this up - it was just mindless vandalism," he said.

"Of the second offence, a part of the mechanism was broken which is why the compensation is more.

"My client wasn't the only person involved, and he should only pay half the compensation."

A Lancashire car park could also require parking barriers after a breach from travellers earlier this month.
