The Scottish government has given Graham Construction the go ahead to begin construction on three brand new healthcare centres in Lanarkshire in the new year.
Costing a whopping £51 million, the development will see state-of-the-art institutions provide an essential service to over 89,000 residentsin Wishaw, East Kilbride and Kilsyth.
This is just one of many projects that are being delivered over the next three years, which will see a massive £350 million investment be used to produce community hospitals and healthcare centres across the whole of Scotland.
It is envisaged that this initiative, which is expected to begin as early as January, will take approximately 19 months to complete.
Deputy first minister Nicola Sturgeon commented that it is important that people in the country have access to the best healthcare facilities in the world.
“That is why we are investing hundreds of millions in infrastructure to ensure both staff and patients can work and be treated in the best possible surroundings,” he continued.
“The construction project will provide a boost for the local economy, creating new jobs and apprenticeships, and will ultimately result in three new purpose-built, modern health facilities, benefiting patients across Lanarkshire.”
Ian Ross, chief executive of NHS Lanarkshire, said that he and his colleagues are delighted to get the green light for this project, which will help develop “first class” health centres for people in the region.
He described it as being an exciting initiative that will produce a wide range of community health services, which in turn will allow them “to introduce additional local services”.
“These three health centres build upon the substantial investment we have made in recent years in new local primary care and community services in Lanarkshire,” Mr Ross continued.
“Their development will mean we will complete the second phase of our primary care capital invest programme ahead of schedule.”
