Tottenham Hotspur's plans of building a new stadium have started to get underway with the announcement that a contractor has been chosen for a supermarket close to where the ground will be situated.
Club officials stated that McLaren Construction will be given the task of building the new Sainsbury's outlet as the north London side begins the first part of its commitment to providing much-needed regeneration of the surrounding area. As well as the retail facility McLaren will also be asked to create a host of commercial and education spaces that will be used by the club when the stadium is completed in the near future.
Tottenham has been focused on helping to rejuvenate the community in which its current White Hare Lane ground is situated in since the riots of 2011, which saw a large part of the area severely damaged by violence and looting. Following the riots, first team players Benoît Assou-Ekotto and Peter Crouch, now of Stoke City, helped with the clean-up operation that was carried out in and around the area.
Officials believe that this first part of the development of a new stadium will help to provide 250 jobs to the area, while at the same time securing further positions at the current Sainsbury's store in Tottenham.
The club said that work on the development will begin later this month with a predicted completion date of late 2013/early 2014. When finished the 130,000 sq ft supermarket will be one of the largest of its kind and will incorporate a dedicated support team that will help local people gain the jobs that are being made available by Sainsbury's.
Kevin Taylor, chairman McLaren Group, said: "After the successful completion of the club's training centre, we are very proud to be awarded the contract for phase 1 of the development of the club's existing site. This award is testament to the strong partnership between McLaren and Tottenham Hotspur, and we look forward to continuing to build this relationship for the future."
