Councillors watched as the security fencing came down when the improvements to a vandalised playground in Oxford were completed.

The play area in Townsend Square, which had been heavily vandalised in 2002, has reopened complete with brand new equipment moving it into the 21st century. The site opened this week and included new climbing frames and balancing logs.

Oxford Lord Mayor Elise Benjamin said that the campaign to refurbish the play area started when the swings and roundabout in the old playground were damaged nine years ago.

Improvements to the play area are part of a £2.5 million regeneration programme for all facilities across the city.

Ms Benjamin told the Oxford Mail: "Kids want somewhere to play. I have been on various site visits over the last ten years trying to move this forward, as have my predecessors."

A new play area is also being planned inside the grounds of Aberystwyth Castle after proposals were approved by Ceredigion County Council.
