Security fencing at St Mildred's Church in Whippingham, the Isle of Wight, may have to be improved after vandals broke through it to cause damage to the church's roof.
The church, which is in the middle of a £700,000 restoration project, was targeted by intruders who climbed up the scaffold and threw objects on the roof, breaking tiles and causing other damage, the Isle of Wight County Press reports.
Police are currently investigating the incident and are appealing to the public for help.
Church treasurer Sue Richmond told the newspaper: "It's heartbreaking to think, just as everything was nearly up together, we have this to deal with.
"It's particularly annoying when so much effort has been put in to get to where we are."
The chancel of St Mildred's Church was built in 1854 by the architect Albert Jenkins Humbert, and the rest of the building was completed in 1862.
