Vauxhall Tube station is set to undergo a significant renovation project over the coming years as part of an initiative from Transport for London (TfL).

The organisation stated it would be investing £45 million into an upgrade, which will also help to support growth and regeneration within the surrounding area. Construction companies are being encouraged to come forward with bids to start the building phase of the project, which is expected to begin in 2014 with a completion date earmarked for 2015.

Officials have said the upgrade is required to handle the 40 per cent increase in passenger footfall that is expected in the coming years.

Vauxhall is one of the busiest railway stations in the capital and accommodates both Underground and National Rail services and also boasts the second most-used bus station in London after Victoria.

According to figures from the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), an average of 16 million people use Vauxhall station every year and this had prompted officials to take action and improve the current facilities.

David Waboso, capital programmes director of London Underground, said: "Vauxhall is a very busy Tube station, with about 21 million people using it annually, and is set to get busier. This upgrade will make the station step-free, will give passengers more space and will make journeys through the station quicker and more pleasant."

The upgrade is part of the transformation project of the Battersea Nine Elms area and TfL has stated that this development is part of a wide-ranging initiative throughout London for investing in transport schemes.

It is designed to help support economic growth throughout the capital which is hoped to create 20,000 jobs and 16,000 homes in the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea areas.

London is undergoing a major change in terms of its transport network as the new Crossrail development is set to bring another choice for commuters looking for a high speed connection across the city to get to and from work.
