Vinci Construction has begun work on an arts college in Liverpool after being awarded a contract by developer Neptune Projects.

The company is building the St John Bosco Arts College, a three-storey girls' college, on the site of the existing school which is set to be demolished. The development is expected to cost £18.2 million to complete and continues the work done by Neptune as an affiliate partner to Regeneration Liverpool, a joint venture between regeneration specialist Sigma and Liverpool City Council.

Mayor Joe Anderson is aiming to deliver 12 new secondary, primary and special schools around the city and St John Bosco, which will be situated in Croxteth is one of the first. Officials explained around £170 million will be invested through council funds, borrowing and cash secured through the City Deal which had been negotiated with the government.

St John Bosco is set to be a state-of-the-art facility with the campus including a 3G synthetic all-weather sports pitch alongside a multi-use games area. The move is aimed at carrying on the former school's sporting activities and will allow pupils to access the very best facilities available to them.

Mark Thomas, regional director, Vinci Construction UK, building division - north-west, said: “The enthusiasm from the pupils and staff to receive a new school is unprecedented. Once completed, the modern school campus will shape their learning facilities well into the future and provide a unique arts college for students in Liverpool. We look forward to delivering an exceptional college for Neptune Developments.”

The school is set to house 1,100 pupils and is expected to open its doors in September 2014. Liverpool has been working hard on regenerating the city and the council announced in April that it had received an "overwhelming" response for its scheme to buy a house for £1 in some of less developed parts of the city.

Liverpool council's 'Homes for £1' scheme is designed to bring vacant properties back to life and it has already received over 4,000 expressions of interest from people in the city.
