Birmingham is set to get a taste of the Las Vegas life after work on a super casino in England's second city got underway.

Galliford Try has been given the go-ahead to start the £89 million complex, which will be situated near the National Exhibition Centre (currently known as the LG Arena), sitting on the outskirts of the city near to Birmingham Airport.

The seven-storey, 538,000 sq ft Resorts World leisure complex will be owned and operated by Genting Casinos UK, which is a subsidiary of the Malaysian Genting Group. The company already has a prominent interest within Birmingham as it is the current shirt sponsor of Premier League football side Aston Villa.

Officials have said that the site is due to be under construction for the next two years and will open its doors to the public in early 2015.

Once completed it will include the aforementioned casino along with a 176-bed four to five star hotel and spa, conference facility, a factory outlet centre, a cinema, as well as parking for 480 cars and it is hoped it will provide a major boost to the city's commerce.

Genting UK stated that it will create employment opportunities with around 1,750 construction jobs being created along with a 1,100 positions when the complex opens. There had been worries that a major casino would encourage gambling problems in the city but the company was quick to dispel these concerns.

Peter Brooks, president of Genting UK, said: "A concern that people express about gambling is the impact on local neighbourhoods. This is an island site; those reservations around casinos on the high street do not apply here.

"The casino industry has an excellent record in promoting responsible gambling. We are accredited by GamCare and our staff are trained to recognise and deal with those issues."

The creation of this site follows the scrapping of plans for a similar facility to be built near to the Etihad Stadium in Manchester in 2008 due to a fear that it would encourage gambling in the area.
