An extension and refurbishment project costing £1.5 million has begun at an historic GP surgery in Tiverton, Devon.
Clare House Surgery, a Grade II listed building, welcomes more than 10,000 patients each year and will be enlarged by over 4,000 sq ft to allow it to play a larger role in the community.
A total of ten consulting rooms will be fitted out in the extension, along with two treatment rooms and a minor operations room for the eight partners and three associate GPs to work in.
Morgan Sindall will deliver the works with the project being managed by Haldons Construction, bringing the surgery up to 21st century standards.
Linda Bent, business manager at Clare House Surgery, said that the need for the extension has been clear for "quite some time" and she was thrilled to see the work beginning.
"The new extension and refurbishment programme will provide modern purpose built facilities for the continuing standard of care that patients of Clare House regard so highly."
It is expected that the work will be completed later this summer.
Chris Spear, area director for Morgan Sindall, added: "Serving so many people in the community, Clare House is a vital facility in Tiverton and the surrounding area. The enlarging of this surgery will allow the practice to continue providing its many patients with the care they need. The Morgan Sindall team has a wealth of experience in the medical sector and are pleased to be able to use these skills on this important project."
His words were echoed by Haldons Construction's Mark Coton, who noted that the surgery is surrounded by other listed buildings. This meant that Barnstaple architect Jerry Kent was called in to ensure that the design of the new extension was in keeping with the building's past, along with the original house.
The house, which was the site of religious premises, was destroyed during the time of the siege of Tiverton Castle during the Civil War.
