New play area fencing could be among the introductions made to playgrounds in Wrexham after the Welsh government made funding available for improvements.

Around £178,000 will now be spent on the most deprived areas of the town after a successful bid was made to the government's Communities First Outcomes Fund. reports that the money will be spent on supporting the development of adventure playgrounds in the area and helping children "develop their own resilience" to cope with the effects of living in poverty.

A council spokeswoman told the news provider that money will also be used to provide year-round staffed play provision.

"Due to increasing restrictions on children's free time and space for playing, there is a need to compensate them by providing them with opportunities to experience everyday, playful adventures similar to those taken for granted by previous generations," she added.

Fencing may also be required in Abronhill after vandals struck at a nearby playground and skatepark.
