Specifying Security Gates

Security gates play a vital role in safeguarding people, property, and assets across a wide range of environments. For architects, specifiers, and contractors, the right security gate is more than just a physical barrier; it’s an integral part of a well designed, integrated perimeter protection system. From selecting the most suitable style and operation mode to understanding the performance benefits and installation considerations, this guide explores everything you need to know about security gates, with a particular focus on the premium solutions designed and manufactured by Jacksons Fencing.

Security Gates

What is a Security Gate?

A security gate is a controlled access point designed to prevent unauthorised entry while allowing safe passage for authorised vehicles and pedestrians. Security gates can be installed as standalone solutions or integrated seamlessly into fencing systems. They should combine durability, functionality, and visual appeal; ensuring security does not come at the expense of design.

For architects, specifying the right gate involves balancing several priorities: security rating, site aesthetics, access control requirements, automation compatibility, and longevity. Whether the installation is for a data centre, logistics hub, school, or private residence, writing a detailed and accurate gate specification is essential to long-term performance.

Types of Security Gate: Styles and Operation

Security gates come in a range of styles and modes of operation, each designed to suit different applications and security levels.

Styles/Infills and Materials for Security Gates

Vertical Bar Security Gates

Vertical bar security gates are among the most popular and versatile options. Their strong welded pale-through-rail construction provides high visibility, good airflow, and excellent resistance to cutting and tampering, while providing a smart appearance. They are ideal for schools, public spaces, and commercial sites where aesthetics and safety are equally important. Pales can be customised with finials and barbs or they can be cranked, for visual appeal and deterrence.

Welded Mesh Security Gates

Welded mesh gates provide an effective deterrent against climbing, animal egress, and cutting (different mesh options offer differing levels of cut-resistance and security). A welded mesh infill offers a simple solution with both strength and visibility for many applications, from schools and industrial sites, to data centres and utilities. A welded mesh infill is commonly chosen for large gates, as it generally weighs less than vertical bar. Mesh security gates can have an infill of V mesh (EuroGuard Extra), V mesh with timber slats (EuroGuard Combi), twin wire mesh (EuroGuard Flatform), 358 mesh (Securi-Mesh), and double layer 358 mesh (Securi-Mesh Plus). Ask our expert team if you are unsure which to specify for your application.

Timber Security Gates

Timber gates deliver a warm, natural appearance and are typically used for residential applications, but built in the right way can also offer security. By nature; typically being solid with no gaps, they also offer privacy which is important for security in certain applications. In addition, timber gates can be combined with steel elements such as the steel frames in our Courtyard gates or the v mesh panels in our EuroGuard Combi. Jacksons’ timber gates are constructed from premium Jakcure® pressure-treated softwood and engineered for durability and stability.

Acoustic Security Gates

Also made from timber, in environments where noise reduction is a design priority, such as near highways, schools, or industrial sites, acoustic security gates help reduce sound transmission while maintaining secure access control. With two layers of timber boards and additional layers of steel mesh, our acoustic gates provide multiple benefits: security, noise reduction, privacy, and visual appeal.

Modes of Operation

After you have decided which type of infill you require, choose your mode of operation; do you want the gate to slide, swing, or fold?

Swing Security Gates

Swing gates are the most commonly specified and installed thanks to their simple mechanism and general lack of stipulations for installation. Their straightforward design; hinged like a traditional door, makes them easy to operate manually or automate with minimal infrastructure.  They require less maintenance than more complex systems and can be installed in a wide range of environments without the need for extensive groundwork. Whether opening inward or outward, swing gates offer a clean, classic aesthetic while delivering reliable access control.

Sliding Security Gates

Sliding gates are ideal for sites with limited space next to the opening or where large openings are required. Available in tracked or cantilevered versions, they offer smooth, controlled movement and can span widths of up to 20 metres for double-leaf designs.

Bi-Folding Security Gates

Where speed of operation is critical such as in data centres or emergency service facilities, bi-folding speed gates provide rapid opening and closing times without compromising security.

Finally, decide if you need the gate to be automated or manual. We recommend that large, sliding, and bi-folding gates are automated. This should be specified when ordering to ensure the gate is adapted for automation and fit for purpose.

Electric Security Gates

Electric or automated security gates integrate seamlessly with access control systems such as keypads, card readers, or vehicle detection loops. Jacksons gates are designed from the outset to be automation-ready, with reinforced bottom rails and precision-engineered frames to handle the additional forces of powered operation safely.

The Benefits of Jacksons’ Security Gates

Jacksons Fencing has been designing and manufacturing security gates in Britain since 1947. Every gate reflects a commitment to quality, longevity, and security that sets Jacksons apart.

25 Year Guarantee

Each gate is backed by a 25 year guarantee against rust, corrosion, and manufacturing defects. This provides exceptional peace of mind for specifiers and clients alike, ensuring performance and appearance are maintained for decades. In addition, automated gates are supplied with a 25 month automation guarantee.

Made in Britain and Made to Order

All Jacksons security gates are made in Britain at the company’s Kent-based manufacturing facility. Every gate is made to order, allowing precise alignment with project specifications and ensuring a perfect fit on site. This also means gates can be manufactured to match existing fencing systems or architectural features.

Premium Galvanised Steel

The use of premium galvanised steel provides superior protection against corrosion and weathering. In addition, our security gates can be polyester powder coated with an architectural grade finish in your choice of colour.

Shear Nuts and Adjustable Hinges

Shear nuts are fitted as standard on many Jacksons gates to prevent tampering. All gates are fitted with adjustable hinges, making maintenance straightforward; a small but important feature that allows for easy seasonal adjustment without dismantling the gate. Using a spanner, site teams can make quick adjustments to ensure the gate remains perfectly aligned and closes securely all year round.

Morticed Locks and Bespoke Security Features

For additional protection, morticed locks and other bespoke locking options can be specified. This ensures that each gate meets the required security and operational needs of the site.

Security Gate Size

Jacksons’ security gates are available in a wide range of standard and bespoke sizes. Typical pedestrian gates start at around 1.2 metres wide, while single vehicle access gates can be supplied up to 10 metres wide per leaf, meaning a double-leaf gate can span up to 20 metres.

Because each gate is made to order, specifiers have full flexibility in terms of height, width, infill type, and finish, ensuring every installation meets both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Applications of Security Gates

Security gates serve an enormous range of applications across both commercial and residential sectors.

Security Gates for Businesses

For commercial premises, security gates for businesses create a clear boundary and control access effectively. From warehouses and offices to retail parks, they help protect assets and staff while maintaining a professional appearance.

Industrial Security Gates

Industrial security gates are built for heavy duty performance, handling frequent operation, and large vehicle access.

Home Security Gates

In residential settings, home security gates enhance safety and add kerb appeal. Whether you choose metal security gates for gardens, metal driveway gates, or wooden security gates, Jacksons’ designs combine beauty with strength.

Security Gate Installation

A well designed security gate deserves professional installation. Proper alignment, foundation preparation, and integration with access control or automation systems are essential to ensuring performance and longevity. Jacksons provides full technical support, drawings, and installation guidance to ensure that every security gate performs exactly as intended.

For architects and specifiers, security gates represent a critical interface between access and protection. Choosing a high quality, made-to-order solution ensures long-term reliability, safety, and ease of use. With a 25 year guarantee, premium materials, and expert British craftsmanship, Jacksons’ security gates deliver unrivalled performance.
