Background
The River Ayr is the largest river in Ayrshire, Scotland, and has seen a number of changes in recent years. The latest is the development of a pontoon and steps to increase accessibility for water sports including rowing, canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, a project requested by the University of the West of Scotland, through which the river runs.
Those set to benefit from the new facility include a community programme on the River Ayr run by Scottish Rowing in conjunction with Ayrshire College; care experienced groups and young carers from various academies; school and community groups supported by the Council's outdoor learning team; the Outdoor Partnership, and Kyle Kayak Club.
The River Ayr will also host a Scottish Regatta in 2024, linking in with the Scottish Rowing events calendar, and become a 'learn to row' area for communities, as well as talent identification for Scottish Rowing programmes.
The project required a number of steps for completion, including earthworks and profiling of the upper riverbank area, diver works to install the foundation frame and installation of the steps, a bituminous walkway with kerbing and resin bound gravel surfacing, handrailing, and finally security fencing and gating.
Solution
To prevent unauthorised use of the steps without permission, fencing and a gate were required to secure the steps and provide access when required. This also ensures public safety to anyone in close proximity to the water by restricting access.
The client chose our EuroGuard Flatform fencing and gates to secure the area. With the largest apertures out of our mesh fencing styles, this style of fencing provides excellent visibility and does not obstruct the view to the river which is important in natural environments. It also enables clear vision for spectators and supervisors.
The client chose a black polyester powder coating for a smart appearance. We carry out all polyester powder coating in our own plant at our headquarters in Ashford, Kent. When fencing and gates are installed within 500m of the sea, open water or an estuary, we always recommend that the fencing is marine coated. Explore our different finishes here.
