Background

Olympia has been at the heart of London's events industry since 1886, hosting exhibitions, trade shows, cultural events and live entertainment for nearly 140 years. Today, the historic venue is undergoing a transformative £1.3 billion redevelopment that is reshaping the 14-acre site into a world class destination featuring entertainment venues, offices, hotels, restaurants, public spaces and enhanced transport connections.

A key part of the redevelopment has been the transformation of Olympia Way and the surrounding public realm, creating a more welcoming, pedestrian-focused environment while improving access to Kensington (Olympia) Station. The completed development is expected to attract millions of visitors annually, with forecasts suggesting approximately 3.5 million visitors to its venues and attractions each year and up to 10 million annual visits across the wider destination.

As part of these improvements, Jacksons Fencing was proud to supply its EuroGuard® Flatform fencing and gates to help create safe, attractive and secure pedestrian routes around Kensington (Olympia) Station, ensuring visitors can move confidently between public transport and the regenerated Olympia destination.

Challenge

Railway stations present unique perimeter security and access control challenges. Every day, thousands of passengers and staff pass through station environments, making safety, durability and effective pedestrian management essential.

Fencing and gates around railway stations play several important roles:

  • Defining clear pedestrian routes and station boundaries.
  • Preventing unauthorised access to operational or restricted areas.
  • Protecting passengers from potential hazards.
  • Managing pedestrian flow during busy events and peak travel periods.
  • Supporting operational and maintenance access requirements.
  • Enhancing the appearance of public spaces while maintaining security.
  • For Kensington (Olympia) Station, these requirements were particularly important due to the scale of the surrounding regeneration project. The upgraded station environment needed fencing and gates capable of withstanding heavy daily use while complementing the premium appearance of one of London's most significant redevelopment schemes.

The solution also needed to provide controlled access for authorised personnel, maintain a welcoming atmosphere for visitors arriving at exhibitions and events, and deliver long-term durability with minimal maintenance demands.

    Solution

To meet these requirements, Jacksons supplied its EuroGuard® Flatform welded mesh fencing system together with matching single-leaf and double-leaf access gates.

Combining strength, aesthetics and practicality, EuroGuard Flatform is a premium twin-wire welded mesh fencing system designed to provide robust boundary protection without creating a harsh or imposing appearance. Its flat profile offers excellent visibility, helping to create open and welcoming public environments while clearly defining boundaries and access routes.

The fencing was selected to blend seamlessly into the wider station and public realm improvements, contributing to an attractive and modern arrival experience for visitors travelling to Olympia's exhibitions and events.

    Secure access control

Jacksons supplied single-leaf and double-leaf gates to accommodate various operational requirements around the station environment. The double-leaf gates provide sufficient width for higher pedestrian volumes and vehicular access where required, helping to prevent congestion and maintain safe movement through the site. When the larger gates are closed, the single-leaf gate provides secure and discreet access for authorised personnel.

To further enhance security and usability, the gates were fitted with mechanical code locks. These locks offer reliable access control without the need for power supplies, wiring or electronic systems. Authorised users can gain entry easily while helping to prevent unauthorised access to restricted areas.

The result is a practical access solution that balances operational efficiency with security and long-term reliability.

    Designed for safety

Public transport environments demand fencing solutions that not only perform well but also help create safe spaces for passengers and visitors. EuroGuard Flatform features a smooth welded mesh construction that avoids many of the risks associated with more aggressive security fencing styles while still providing a robust and durable boundary solution.

This makes it particularly well suited to busy public settings where large numbers of people interact with the built environment every day.

By helping to channel pedestrian movement, define secure areas and support safe access management, the fencing contributes to an environment that is both secure and user-friendly.

    Built to last

Infrastructure projects require products capable of delivering long-term performance, and durability was a key consideration for the Kensington (Olympia) Station installation.

Manufactured from high quality steel and protected using Jacksons' advanced coating processes, EuroGuard Flatform is designed to withstand the demands of busy public environments with minimal maintenance requirements.

This focus on longevity helps reduce whole-life costs and supports asset owners in delivering infrastructure that continues to perform year after year.

    Supporting sustainable development

Sustainability remains an important consideration across modern construction and regeneration projects, particularly those designed to serve communities for decades to come.

Jacksons' approach to manufacturing prioritises durability and long product life cycles, helping reduce the need for premature replacement and minimising material waste over time.

By investing in high quality fencing systems designed for long-term performance and backed by a 25 year Service Life Guarantee, developers and operators can support more sustainable infrastructure outcomes while benefiting from lower maintenance and replacement requirements.

A proud contribution to Olympia's future

The redevelopment of Olympia represents one of London's most ambitious regeneration projects, transforming a historic exhibition venue into a vibrant destination for culture, business, entertainment and community life.

As millions of visitors are expected to travel through the area in the years ahead, safe and efficient movement between public transport and the destination itself will be crucial to its success.

Jacksons Fencing is proud to have played a role in delivering this vision through the supply of EuroGuard Flatform fencing and gates at Kensington (Olympia) Station.
