Background

As part of a wider community development project in West Sussex, Westbourne Community Trust undertook the construction of 12 new homes alongside a range of improvements designed to benefit local residents. The development included an allotment store, remodelling of the adjoining public open space, new off-street parking bays, and associated landscaping works.

A key requirement of the project was the creation of a secure allotment area that could only be accessed by authorised residents. To achieve this, metal security fencing was chosen that would provide a strong perimeter while maintaining visibility, durability, and an attractive appearance appropriate for a residential setting.

As experienced metal security fencing suppliers, we supplied our Barbican® vertical bar fencing to help secure the site and support the long term success of the community allotments.

Community allotments offer valuable benefits, providing residents with access to green space, opportunities to grow their own produce, and a place to connect with neighbours. However, these spaces can also be vulnerable to unauthorised access, vandalism, and theft if not adequately protected.

For the West Sussex development, the fencing solution needed to:

  • Restrict access to authorised residents only
  • Provide a strong and durable perimeter
  • Complement the surrounding residential environment
  • Maintain clear visibility into and out of the site
  • Be suitable for long term outdoor use with minimal maintenance
  • Consider local wildlife and biodiversity

To meet these requirements, our Barbican® metal security fencing panels and matching Barbican® gates were supplied in a black powder coated finish

The combination of galvanising and powder coating provides excellent protection against corrosion, helping to ensure a long service life even in challenging outdoor environments. The black finish was chosen to create a smart and unobtrusive appearance that complements the modern new build homes adjoining the allotments, helping the fencing blend into the development while still providing an effective level of security.

Why Barbican® Metal Security Fencing?

Barbican® is a popular choice for projects that require an effective balance of security, durability, and aesthetics. Its robust steel construction and anti-climb design make it well suited to locations where access control is important without creating an overly industrial appearance.

The system features vertical hollow section pales passed through horizontal rails, creating a strong and rigid structure. The pales are cut at a 45-degree angle to form a pointed top, providing an additional visual and physical deterrent to climbing attempts.

Several features made the fencing particularly suitable for this allotment project:

Enhanced Security Through Anti-Climb Design

Security was a key consideration for the site. The vertical pale construction offers few footholds, making climbing difficult. This helps discourage unauthorised access while maintaining an open and welcoming appearance.

Vandal Resistant Construction

Unlike fencing systems like triple point palisade, our vertical bar fencing incorporates unique vandal proof panel-to-post connectors that help prevent tampering and unauthorised removal of panels. This provides reassurance that the perimeter will continue to perform effectively over time.

Building Regulation Compliant Pale Spacing

The vertical pale spacing conforms to anti-trap requirements, helping to create a safer environment in publicly accessible locations.

Considering Wildlife

While security was essential, the project also recognised the importance of supporting local wildlife.

Unlike some alternative perimeter systems, vertical bar fencing can be a more wildlife-friendly option. The open design maintains visibility and avoids creating a solid barrier within the landscape.

Importantly, when installed at the recommended height above ground level, the pale spacing can allow small wildlife such as hedgehogs to move freely beneath the fencing. This helps preserve natural wildlife routes and supports biodiversity within the local area.

Supporting a Wider Community Development

The allotment fencing forms part of a much broader scheme designed to enhance the local neighbourhood. Alongside the new homes, landscaping improvements, and public realm upgrades, the secure allotment area creates a valuable shared resource for residents.

By restricting access to authorised users, the fencing helps create a safer and more secure environment for gardening activities, protecting crops, tools and equipment from potential interference.

The visibility offered by the steel pale design also helps promote natural surveillance, allowing the allotments to remain visually connected to the surrounding development while maintaining controlled access.

A Reliable Metal Security Fencing Solution

For community projects, achieving the right balance between security, appearance and practicality is essential. The Barbican® system supplied for this West Sussex allotment scheme demonstrates how metal security fencing can provide effective perimeter protection without compromising on aesthetics or environmental considerations.

The robust steel construction, anti-climb design, and vandal resistant features help create a secure boundary, while the black powder coated finish delivers a clean and attractive appearance suited to a residential setting.

As trusted metal security fencing suppliers, we were pleased to supply a fencing solution that contributes to the long-term success of this community-focused development. The project showcases how carefully specified metal security fencing panels can help protect shared spaces, support access control requirements, and provide a durable perimeter that will continue to perform for years to come.
