Background

Travis Perkins has recently opened a new depot in Coventry on the site of a former Homebase store. While the redevelopment marked an important commercial investment in the area, its location close to residential properties raised some concerns among local residents.

From the outset, mitigating the potential noise impact of the new depot was a significant part of the planning process. During the consultation phase, some residents expressed opposition to the plans; worried about increased noise and disruption from deliveries, machinery, and general operational activity. The updated application included detailed drawings for proposed fencing to help address these issues.

With this in mind, it was essential to specify a fencing solution that would go beyond standard perimeter security; one that would actively reduce sound transmission, enhance privacy, and provide a visually appealing finish to the new site.

Solution

Jacksons Fencing was contracted to manufacture and install 160 metres of 2 metre high 12K Envirofence® acoustic fencing, our lightweight reflective timber acoustic barrier system. Designed to meet stringent sound reduction requirements with a surface mass of 10-12kg/m², 12K Envirofence was the ideal choice for reducing environmental noise while delivering a robust and aesthetically pleasing site boundary.

Our team managed the project from start to finish, including the removal of existing fencing and vegetation to prepare the site. The new acoustic fence was installed following the site’s kerb lines and securely set into concrete foundations, ensuring long-term durability and structural integrity.

12K Envirofence is constructed using precision-machined, interlocking timber boards designed to create a solid, gap-free surface. This design not only helps to block and reflect sound back toward the source, but also provides complete visual screening, protecting the privacy of both depot users and nearby residents.

Unlike standard timber fencing, which primarily serves as a boundary marker, an acoustic barrier is engineered specifically to absorb and reflect sound waves, significantly reducing the impact of operational noise in built-up or residential areas.

Aesthetics and Design

While functionality was a key requirement, the visual appearance of the fence was also important. The site is visible from nearby residential streets and is surrounded by trees and greenery, so it was essential that the new fencing complemented the environment. The natural timber finish of 12K Envirofence provides a warm, attractive visual boundary that softens the transition between the industrial depot and the neighbouring homes. The clean, uniform lines of the acoustic boards also help present a professional and well-maintained frontage, contributing positively to the local streetscape.

Over time, the timber will weather naturally to a silvery grey, blending further into its surroundings without compromising performance.

Guaranteed Performance

All Jacksons acoustic fencing systems are manufactured in the UK and treated using our unique timber preservation process. As a result, the entire installation is backed by our 25 year guarantee against rot and insect attack, providing peace of mind for both the client and the community.

The installation of 12K Envirofence has played a vital role in making the new Coventry builders merchant a success. The barrier helps limit noise disturbance, reduce light spill, and protect the privacy of nearby homes, delivering a comprehensive solution that satisfies both operational requirements and local planning considerations.

By choosing Jacksons Fencing, Travis Perkins has demonstrated a commitment to responsible site development and community awareness, ensuring the depot not only functions effectively but also respects the needs of its residential neighbours.
