Drivers faced congestion after the A64 near Scarborough was closed following a motorcyclist crashing into a set of traffic barriers.

A 45-year-old man, believed to be from the Leeds area, was travelling along the road towards Malton at 1pm on his scooter when he hit the barrier after losing control of his 125cc Piaggio vehicle.

The incident, which took place on Sunday (January 8th), forced police to close the road for two hours in both directions. The man was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary and treated for serious injuries.

Sgt Sean Grey, in charge of traffic in the area, told the Scarborough Evening News: "The road was closed in both directions, with diversions, for about two and a half hours."

He added that there no other vehicles involved in the crash.

Elsewhere, in Marlborough a bollard thought to be made from an old cannon and protecting a 17th century building was demolished by a lorry that crashed into it.
