Traffic barriers are to be set up in Bridport as the beginning of a six-month gas-pipe-replacement project draws closer.
Some £400,000 is being spent on replacing old gas pipes in South and East Street in the town and Southern Gas Networks expects works to take place until Easter 2012.
However, the news has not been welcomed by local traders who feel that their businesses are going to be greatly affected, bridportnews.co.uk reports.
Ross Hendy, of The Book Shop in South Street, told the news provider that people will head elsewhere while works are taking place.
"It's ludicrous. I am flabbergasted that they should even consider closing South Street. It keeps people out of the town.
"They go somewhere else if they think it is going to be chaotic."
Spenborough also saw traffic barriers installed last month as utility firms replaced more than 250 metres of gas pipes on Cleckheaton main road.
