More crash barriers will be installed and existing ones repaired as funding for a project to protect motorists in Wokingham looks set to continue.

A campaign to install traffic barriers on the A329(M) was launched in February last year after a 23-year-old man died when his vehicle crossed its central reservation and collided with a van, getwokingham.co.uk reports.

Wokingham Borough Council is now preparing to put aside £750,000 to fund barriers for the next two years, with a further £2.2 million to come in 2013/14.

Existing barriers will be maintained with a new one to be installed on the A33.

"The crash barriers on the A329 have been installed as part of a multi-year project. We know already that several drivers owe their lives to these newly-installed barriers," councillor Keith Baker told the newspaper.

"We promised to improve the safety on this road despite lack of government funds which we have done."

Recently, fire chiefs in Hull called for crash barriers to be installed alongside the city's river after several incidents of people falling in.ADNFCR-3337-ID-800446967-ADNFCR
