Two open level crossing security barriers could be shut in Dingwall if talks between Network Rail and the Highland Council are successful.
Dingwall Academy, the largest school in Ross-shire, had to delay its opening time by 20 minutes after the crossing malfunctioned leaving many motorists unable to cross the railway.
Since December 2010 the academy has reported at least four faults at the level crossing on Newton Road, situated near the front of the school.
Both agencies will now discuss whether to close the crossing completely and building a new third crossing. The academy's rector Karen Cormack admits she does not have "100 per cent confidence" in the crossing.
Local MSP Dave Thompson, told the Journal: "My concern is that, if such malfunctions happen regularly, members of the public could lose trust in the signals shown and could be encouraged to cross the rail line despite a clear signal that a train is approaching."
Elsewhere, drivers faced congestion after the A64 near Scarborough was closed following a motorcyclist crashing into a set of traffic barriers.
